Talking Wedding Flowers with Katie Musgrave of Unruly Flowers

by Danielle | June 2020 | Planning & Ideas

Wondering where to start with your flowers? Then let us help you! Katie is a remarkably incredible florist, and full of expertise and advice when it comes to planning your wedding flowers, so here are a few helpful tips on how to go for the right flowers for your special day.

Think about the flowers as early as possible in planning.  Flowers are so important for the look and feel of the day and finding the right florist should not be left to the last minute or what’s left of the budget.

When looking for a florist really look at their portfolio and work.  As well as a website, lots of florists use Instagram to showcase their portfolio and style.

Do they have a consistent style that matches what you are looking for? Do you love their work?  Do you love their ethos? There are so many florists with such a range of style –so keep looking until you find someone who can really deliver on the style you are going for.  Locality is important as well, try and find florists as close as possible to the venue.

Before chatting to the florist have a think about:

Budget! How much have you allocated?

Colours and style/ feel of the wedding.

Have you got a mood board?

The florist will want to know all the details so can help plan your flowers perfectly!  Sites such as Pinterest can be really helpful to communicate some ideas, but try to keep the pictures of flowers you send to the florist to a minimum, it can be overwhelming sending lots of photos with lots of styles, select up to five styles you feel sums up what you are looking for.

Feeling overwhelmed?

If you do not know where to start with thinking about the flowers, start by thinking about your bouquet, and the rest will follow. Have a think about what items you want. For the bridal party- Bridesmaids, buttonholes for the ceremony, urns and for the reception, tables etc.

Florists and Venues can help...

When thinking about what flowers you might need, consider the style and possible restrictions of the venue but don’t worry if you are not sure, this is something you can discuss with your florist and venue.

The most powerful magic of all, is true love.

Opt for Seasonal Flowers

Be open minded to flowers and what’s possible!- the florist will help guide you but really choose a florist with style that you love so you can really put your trust in them to deliver your dream.

My top tip would be to choose seasonal flowers.   You get the best, brightest, most fragrant flowers (at the best prices too!)  that is if you work with the seasons.

Each season bring something new and interesting and that flower will always trigger memories of your special day, every year as the jasmine blooms I think of my wedding flowers!
