Mobile Drinks Bar - Tips

If you have started venturing into your wedding planning process, then you will probably have an idea already of how drinks can play an especially important part on your to-do list. It can be a pricey process and it is a required element on your wedding day. Here we have teamed up with Giles from Sip ‘n’ Swig Mobile Bars to give you some handy tips to help you through the process of organising a wedding watering hole.

I’m Giles and I come from a background of bars, pubs and restaurants, starting at Simpson’s in the Strand (and other bars in the Savoy Group of Hotels) as a cocktail barman and my partner Jodie who has grown up in the family restaurant business. Between us we have over 15 years experience of running event bars and over 30 years in the trade. We are here to give you a few do’s and don’ts when organising a wedding bar."


  • Start by checking that your chosen supplier has public liability insurance and ideally holds a personal licence. The licence is not a necessity but if they do numerous events someone in the company should have one. You may need a Temporary Events Notice, you bar can either gets this for you or help you apply. They cost £21 so don’t pay a fortune for one either.

  • When arriving at the venue don’t make the initial drinks reception too long.  60-90 mins is plenty, remember your guests and yourselves will inevitably be hungry after a while even if there are canapés on offer and there is the possibility that a guest or two may get a bit tiddly if the drinks go on too long before they sit to eat.

  • Work with a supplier that will give you sale or return (per bottle where possible) on your drinks. You don’t want to run out of wine on the table but also you don’t want to spend a fortune and end up buying too much. Also make sure you have plenty of water available for the tables, glass bottles next to the wine bottles look so much nicer than plastic or water jugs

  • Speeches, you can save a lot of money by having the speeches before the wedding breakfast with the guests using their welcome drinks to toast or if at the table let them use the wine on the table. We often find that toast fizz gets left and wasted.

  • When it comes to the evening bar quality drinks make a difference. We find that in general people prefer Craft beers, a good selection of small batch/hand crafted Gins (we take around 20 different ones to ever event) and other new exciting drinks that they’ve never tried. Also don’t forget your non drinkers, there are some superb soft drinks and now also some great breweries doing low and no alcohol beers, Colas are not exciting for non drinkers all night.

  • His and Hers Cocktails on the bar are a nice touch and we often keep track of how many of each we sell for the couples as a competition.

  • Have a list of taxi numbers for your guests to be able to call at the end of the night. Not everyone pre books!

  • Have a cocktail list on your bar but don’t have one that’s too extensive. Cocktails are great but remember they take time to prepare. If your supplier runs them, why not have a cocktail masterclass during weeks before the wedding to decide which ones you want on your bar.

  • People naturally gather around a bar, make sure there is plenty of room in the area you’re going to have your bar set up.

  • Is a booze cruise worth it? In general we say, if you’re planning on going abroad anyway then yes it can be but to make a trip specially often the costs out weigh the savings. Also remember that you’ll need to ensure you buy enough so as to not run out but again you don’t want to be left with a load of drink that you won’t use.
